Typische Eigenschaften übersetzter Texte sind aus Korpusstudien bekannt. Sie lassen jedoch keine Aussagen über deren Ursachen im Übersetzungsprozess zu. Ziel des vorliegenden Projekts ist, durch die neuartige Kombination experimenteller und korpusbasierter Methoden vertiefte Erkenntnisse über kognitive Verarbeitungsprozesse beim Übersetzen von Merkmalen, die als Träger dieser Übersetzungseigenschaften beschrieben wurden, zu gewinnen. Dabei wird die aus der prozessbasierten Übersetzungsforschung bekannte Methodenkombination von keystroke logging und Eyetracking an etablierte psycholinguistische Methoden angenähert. Zu diesem Zweck sollen drei Experimente durchgeführt werden, die durch die Manipulation von Quelltextsegmenten ein größeres Maß an Kontrolle über Störvariablen ausüben und somit eine Annäherung zwischen in der Übersetzungswissenschaft erforderlicher ökologischer Validität und der für verlässliche und valide Aussagen erforderlichen besseren Kontrolle über Störvariablen erzielen. Die Beobachtungen werden dadurch mit linguistischen Erkenntnissen in Einklang gebracht, dass die manipulierten Merkmale aus theoretisch fundierten Konzepten hergeleitet werden. Die experimentell gewonnenen Daten werden korpuslinguistisch angereichert und ermöglichen so eine reichhaltige linguistische Analyse. Sie werden ausführlich auf Hinweise auf eine Korrelation kognitiver Anforderungen mit einer veränderten Komplexität in der Übersetzung hin untersucht. Das Projekt konzentriert sich dabei auf drei verschiedene Formen von Komplexität. Gleichzeitig wird eine klassische korpuslinguistische Auswertung von Übersetzungskorpora in die Interpretation einbezogen. Insgesamt wird ein strikt quantitatives Vorgehen verfolgt, um stochastische Verallgemeinerungen zu erzielen. Neben neuen Erkenntnissen über die Rolle kognitiver Anforderungen beim Übersetzen wird das Projekt auch zur Schließung der methodologischen Lücke zwischen experimenteller und korpusbasierter Übersetzungswissenschaft beitragen, indem experimentelle Daten in eine Datenbank überführt werden, die wie ein Korpus durchsucht werden kann. Dadurch werden in der Folge kausale Erklärungen für korpus-basierte Befunde möglich. Es ist zu erwarten, dass die in diesem Projekt gewonnenen Erkenntnisse über Ursachen spezifischer Eigenschaften übersetzter Texte im Übersetzungsprozess zur empirischen Modellierung des Übersetzens beitragen werden. In einer späteren zweiten Projektphase sollen diese Ergebnisse in Richtung einer empirischen Übersetzungstheorie ausgebaut werden, die dann bisherige impressionistische Modelle ersetzen kann.
