Cognitive Literary Studies

Cognitive Literary Studies

The professorship represents the field of cognitive and empirical literary studies. It is particularly concerned with the processes that recipients use to make sense of literary and cultural phenomena , as well as the effects that such artifacts could trigger in them. The research area does not only consider mental processes, but also the bodily-physical ones. Important concepts in this context are experientiality, experiential feel, enactment imaginations as well as qualia (the quality of what it is like to have an experience). One main focus is on the question of how real recipients (in contrast to hypothesized constructs such as the implied reader) deal with literature and culture. Other special interests include narrative theory, postmodernist novels and plays, indigenous Australian prose, Charles Dickens, Romantic poetry, and film analysis.
