Irene Mittelberg ist Professorin für Linguistik und kognitive Semiotik am Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Romanistik der RWTH Aachen. Sie forscht und lehrt seit 2009 an der RWTH, wo sie das Cognitive Semiotics Lab (ein mit Motion-Capture Technologie ausgestattetes Gestenforschungslabor) und das Kompetenzzentrum für Gebärdensprache und Gestik (SignGes) mit aufgebaut hat und leitet.

Sie studierte französische Sprachwissenschaft, VWL und Kunstgeschichte in Freiburg, Paris und Hamburg und promovierte 2006 an der Cornell University (USA) in Linguistik und kognitiven Studien (Betreuung: Linda Waugh und Michael Spivey).

In Lehre und Forschung verbindet Irene Mittelberg zeitgenössische Ansätze aus der Kognitiven Linguistik mit früheren Arbeiten von Roman Jakobson und der Zeichentheorie von Charles S. Peirce. Im Dialog von Theorie und Empirie, bilden redebegleitende Gesten und andere Formen von Multimodalität (z.B. Text und Bild) Schwerpunkte ihrer Forschung. Sie interessiert sich insbesondere für das Zusammenwirken von Sprache, Denken, Körper (embodiment) und Raum und den zugrundeliegenden kognitiv-semiotischen Prinzipien (z.B. Bildschemata, Metonymie, Metapher, Ikonizität, Indexikalität und Viewpoint).

In interdisziplinären Projekten (u.a. HumTec) hat Irene Mittelberg dazu beigetragen, die Motion-Capture-Technologie für die Gestenforschung an diversen Schnittstellen von Linguistik, Informatik, Akustik und den Neurowissenschaften nutzbar zu machen. Studien mit dem Lehrstuhl für künstlerische Gestaltung (RWTH Fakultät für Architektur) widmeten sich der Rolle von Gesten in Entwurfsprozessen. Jüngere Arbeiten befassen sich mit gestischen Prozessen in der visuellen Kunst und Kunstrezeption im Sinne einer empirischen Ästhetik.

Irene Mittelberg ist im wissenschaftlichen Beirat der Zeitschriften Cognitive Linguistics, und Languages and Modalities, der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Semiotik (DGS) sowie der International Association of Cognitive Semiotics (IACS). Unter ihrer Leitung findet 2022 die IACS4 Konferenz ‚Semiotic Complexities: Theory and Analysis‘ in Aachen statt.
