Alin Olteanu promovierte 2015 an der Roehampton Universität in London und forschte als Postdoktorand im Fachbereich Semiotik an der Universität Tartu in Estland zum Thema Bildung und am Internationalen Semiotik-Institut der Kaunas University of Technology in Litauen zum Thema Multikulturalität.

Seine semiotischen Forschungen in den Bereichen Bildung und Multikulturalität inspirierten Alin Olteanu dazu, Lern- und Kommunikationstheorien zu verbinden. Er untersucht Sprache als Medium sowie den medialen Aspekt des Lernens. Seine aktuellen Forschungsvorhaben betreffen die Entwicklung eines medial-semiotischen Frameworks, das Umweltkompetenzen mit digitalen Kompetenzen vereint und somit eine aus der Bildung stammende Voraussetzung für Nachhaltigkeit darstellt. Dazu verbindet er Biosemiotik und kognitive Semiotik sowie Multimodalität und transmediale Ansätze in Bezug auf Bildung und Kommunikation.
