Alin Olteanu erhielt seinen Ph.D. 2015, an der Roehampton Universität in London. Er war unter anderem Postdoktorand und forschte zum Thema Bildung im Fachbereich Semiotik an der Universität Tartu, Estland und zu Multikulturalität am Internationalen Semiotik Institut der Kaunas University of Technology in Litauen.

Seine Forschung zu Bildung und Multikulturalität, aus einer semiotischen Perspektive, brachte ihn dazu Möglichkeiten zu suchen, Lern- und Kommunikations- Theorien zu verbinden. Er untersucht Sprache als ein Medium sowie den medialen Aspekt des Lernens. Seine aktuelle Forschungsvorhaben zielen darauf ab, ein medial-semiotisches Framework zu entwickeln, welches Umweltkompetenzen mit digitalen Kompetenzen vereint und somit eine aus der Bildung stammende Voraussetzung für Nachhaltigkeit darstellt. Dazu verbindet er Biosemiotik, kognitive Semiotik sowie die Multimodarität und trans-mediale Ansätze zu Bildung und Kommunikation.
