Professor Mittelberg to Give Plenary Lecture at Cognitive Semiotics Conference in Toronto

The third conference of the International Association for Cognitive Semiotics, IACS, takes place from July 13 to 15 in Toronto, Canada. The conference is open to scholars and scientists in semiotics, cognitive science, linguistics, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, and other fields who are interested in discussing processes of meaning-making in an interdisciplinary setting. This year’s theme is "Multimodalities".

Our very own professor Irene Mittelberg will give one of the six plenary lectures. Her talk is on „Gestures as Image Schemas and Force Gestalts: Towards a Dynamic-Systems Account of Enacted Schematicity.“ In this lecture, Professor Mittelberg aims to highlight similarities between deeply embodied structures - such as image schemas, force gestalts, and metaphor - and communicative gestures. She presents a new dynamic-systems approach to image schemas in gesture which is backed up by motion-capture data collected in the Natural Media Lab at HumTec and SignGes.
